When Hurricane Dorian destroyed Charles's home, a chance conversation led volunteers to build him a new one on Green Turtle Cay. With donated lumber and eight days of teamwork, they created a place he can finally call home. A story of resilience, community, and compassion.

After installing windows at Susan Jones’ home, we asked Charles, the elderly gentlemen staying in her attic, where his house had been before Hurricane Dorian. When we visited the site, it became clear there was no way to rebuild there. Unsure how to proceed as non-residents, we later shared our concerns during dinner with local restaurant owner. Grateful for our ongoing efforts on the island, he mentioned that he owned a piece of property where a small two-apartment house could be built. The lumber had already been donated, but no one had stepped forward to construct it. We quickly made plans for our fifth trip to Green Turtle Cay, to build the house. In just eight days, we framed and closed the entire structure, giving Charles a place to call home.
